Shocking new data from the Environment Agency shows that the sewage scandal is still getting worse. In 2023, the privatised water companies discharged raw sewage into our waterways and coastal waters for at least 3.6 million hours – a 105% increase on the previous 12 months. Meanwhile, these companies continue to pour out massive dividends to their shareholders and generous bonuses to their fat-cat bosses. And they want us to pay for the cost of cleaning up their act by putting up our water bills.  Seven year-old Zane Gbangbola died in the early hours of 8 February 2014, when the River Thames flooded at Chertsey in Surrey. The floodwater had brought hydrogen cyanide gas from a nearby contaminated landfill site into his home. Toxic waste that nobody had been told was there.
This week the Green Party is launching a campaign for a 'Zane’s Law', aimed at making toxic waste dumps safe, and on Monday, Green-led Lewes District Council became the first council in England to vote for it. There are at least 1,287 old landfill sites in England thought to contain hazardous materials, and many of these are known to be leaking highly toxic substances. With the ever-growing risk of extreme climate-related events, the danger of floodwater from these sites poisoning those who live near them is also rising – and the regulations around them are shockingly weak. The Green Party has supported Zane’s parents in their struggle for truth and justice, Baroness Natalie Bennett has fought for stronger legislation in Parliament. It's been a busy few weeks for Campaigns Committee, and we've been working on two urgent issues that we know many Greens feel very strongly about - the Rwanda Bill and the horrific violence being inflicted on the people of Gaza.

With the climate emergency accelerating and causing catastrophic impacts all around the world, advertisers still make millions from making it worse. At the very least, such ads should carry a strong ‘health warning’. Whether on TV, in newspapers, on hoardings or anywhere. Just like tobacco ads before these were banned. So, we have a new campaign flatpack for you this month: #DontSellClimateHell. It focuses on a (literally) burning issue, but we hope you’ll have some fun with it too! The Green Party’s conference in October passed a motion, brought by Caroline Lucas, that calls for a ban on the advertising of carbon-intensive products that do extreme damage to the climate, such as airline flights and gas-guzzling SUVs. Our campaign pack gives you resources to draw attention to this issue and put pressure on MPs and the Advertising Standards Agency to change the rules. There are easy actions you can take now. Great, too, if you're short of ideas for party games! And you can already change things at local level: Green Councillors in Hackney recently brought a successful motion aimed at stopping Hackney Council from accepting advertising that contradicts its own Climate Action Plan. Cambridgeshire, Basingstoke and Coventry councils have all passed similar motions this year. We show you how you could do the same. We’ll have more for you in the new year – and we’re already working with Green parliamentarians on a campaign against the government’s cruel and illegal Rwanda Bill.
